MySQL + Orcabase

Your MySQL data, ready to ask about.

Orcabase copies the tables you pick from MySQL, MariaDB or Aurora into your warehouse on a schedule, so you can ask across them in plain words and join them with everything else you’ve connected.

What share of revenue came from subscriptions last month?

Reading your MySQL data…

Subscriptions brought in 69% of August revenue: $33.4k of $48.2k.

  • One-time orders made up the other $14.8k.
  • The subscription share has grown every month since April.
  • Sampler buyers are the biggest source of new subscribers.

How I got this· 4 steps
  1. Looked at your orders
  2. Split them into subscriptions and one-time
  3. Added up each by month
  4. Traced new subscribers to their first order

In plain words

How does Orcabase work with a MySQL database?

Orcabase signs in with a read-only login and copies the tables you choose into a warehouse it hosts for you, every 15 minutes to once a day. Each copy swaps in all at once, so charts never show half-loaded numbers.

Because the copy sits next to your other data, one question can cover your app’s orders and your spreadsheets or payments at the same time.

Ask in plain words

What you can ask about your MySQL data

The agent answers with the number, a chart and the steps it took. Keep the good answers on a dashboard.

  • How much did we sell yesterday, and how does it compare with last week?

  • Which customers order most often?

  • What share of orders use a discount code?

  • Which products run out of stock most often?

  • How many new accounts did we get each week this quarter?

  • Which cities do our customers come from?

  • What’s the average time between first and second order?

  • Show me refunds by reason for the last 90 days.

What comes in

Your MySQL data, ready to ask about.

A copy in a warehouse Orcabase hosts for you, refreshed in full on every sync.

01

The tables you pick

Orders, customers, products or anything else, copied in full on every sync.
02

Tables added later

Tick one box and new tables are picked up automatically.
03

Types that make sense

Numbers stay numbers and dates stay dates, so charts and totals just work.
04

A safe copy

If a sync fails, the last good copy stays in place, and Orcabase only ever reads from MySQL.

Numbers worth defining

Define them once. Every answer agrees.

Tell Orcabase what each number means, certify it, and your dashboards, the agent and your whole team use the same one. The agent can draft these from your MySQL data.

How metrics work

  • Revenue

Paid orders minus refunds, by the day they were paid.

  • Orders per customer

Paid orders divided by the customers who placed them.

  • Discount rate

Share of orders that used a discount code.

  • Refund rate

Refunded amount as a share of revenue.

Dashboards to start with

Your MySQL numbers at a glance.

Ask the agent to build one of these, or pin charts yourself. Share any dashboard with a link.

How to connect

Connect MySQL, step by step.

  1. 1

    Create a read-only login

Two lines on your database give Orcabase a login that can only read. The MySQL guide has them.

  2. 2

    Pick MySQL in Sync data

Go to Sync data → Add source and choose MySQL, under Built into Orcabase.

  3. 3

    Connect

Enter the host, port, database and login, pick your warehouse under Sync into, and click Connect. Orcabase checks it can reach the database.

  4. 4

    Choose tables and a schedule

Tick what to sync, choose how often, and click Start syncing. The first sync usually takes a couple of minutes.

What you’ll need

  • The database’s host, port and name, and a read-only login.
  • A database that accepts connections from the internet, or an allowlist we can be added to.
  • The Admin role in Orcabase, and an Orcabase warehouse to sync into, part of data hosting.

Questions

About MySQL and Orcabase

More in the docs: Sync a MySQL database

Why is MySQL synced instead of read live?
Orcabase reads MySQL through your warehouse, which copies the tables you pick on a schedule. The upside: one question can join your MySQL data with spreadsheets and apps you’ve synced into the same warehouse.
Does it work with MariaDB and Amazon Aurora?
Yes. The same connector covers MySQL, MariaDB and Aurora (MySQL). Use the database’s public address; addresses inside private networks are refused.
Anything to watch out for?
Two things. Each sync copies selected tables in full, so sync big tables less often. And the login details can’t contain spaces or quote marks, so pick a password without them.
How fresh is my MySQL data in Orcabase?
As fresh as you like: syncs run every 15 minutes to once a day, and Sync now runs one straight away. If a sync fails, the last good copy stays in place.

Your MySQL data already has the answers.

Connect it, ask your first question, and pin the answers you want to see every week.
