MongoDB + Orcabase

Finally, answers from your MongoDB data.

Counting, grouping and comparing across MongoDB collections is hard work. Orcabase syncs the collections you pick into your warehouse through Fivetran, so you can ask about users, orders and usage in plain words.

  • Syncs every 6 hours

How many workspaces were active each week this quarter?

Reading your MongoDB data…

2,316 active workspaces last week, up 9% on the week before.

  • Growth comes from teams of 3 to 10 people.
  • Workspaces that invite a second person in week one stay active twice as long.
  • Solo workspaces are flat since June.

Active workspaces by week

How I got this· 4 steps
  1. Looked at your workspaces and events
  2. Counted workspaces with activity each week
  3. Split them by team size
  4. Compared those that invited someone in week one

In plain words

How do you run analytics on MongoDB data?

Analytics needs data laid out in rows and columns, and MongoDB stores documents. Fivetran reads the collections you pick and lays them out as tables in a database Orcabase hosts for you, keeping the copy up to date.

From there it’s like any other source: ask in plain words, get the answer and the chart, and join it with your payments or ads data in one question.

Ask in plain words

What you can ask about your MongoDB data

The agent answers with the number, a chart and the steps it took. Keep the good answers on a dashboard.

  • How many new accounts did we get each week?

  • Which features do our biggest customers use most?

  • How many users were active yesterday?

  • Which accounts stopped using the product this month?

  • What does a typical first week look like?

  • How many documents does each workspace create?

  • Which countries are our users in?

  • Show me signups by plan for the last 90 days.

What comes in

Your MongoDB data, ready to ask about.

A copy in a database Orcabase hosts for you, with its own folder for each app.

01

The collections you pick

Users, accounts, orders or events, laid out as tables with a column per field.
02

Nested fields

Sub-documents and arrays come along, so detail isn’t lost on the way.
03

Changes as they happen

Fivetran picks up new and changed documents on each sync, not a full copy every time.
04

Deletes, if you want them

Removed documents can be marked, so counts stay honest.

Numbers worth defining

Define them once. Every answer agrees.

Tell Orcabase what each number means, certify it, and your dashboards, the agent and your whole team use the same one. The agent can draft these from your MongoDB data.

How metrics work

  • Active accounts

Accounts with at least one event in the period.

  • Signups

New accounts, by the day they were created.

  • Feature adoption

Share of active accounts that used a feature in the period.

  • Churned accounts

Accounts active last month with no activity this month.

Dashboards to start with

Your MongoDB numbers at a glance.

Ask the agent to build one of these, or pin charts yourself. Share any dashboard with a link.

Product usage

4 charts
  • Active accounts by week
  • Feature adoption
  • Signups by plan
  • Churned accounts

First week

  • Actions in week one
  • Invited a teammate
  • Week-one retention by signup week

About dashboards

Better together

Ask across MongoDB and the rest of your business.

The best questions need more than one app. The agent can pull from several sources for one answer.

How to connect

Connect MongoDB, step by step.

  1. 1

    Find it in Sync data

In Orcabase, go to Sync data → Add source and search for MongoDB. Pick the database to sync into.

  2. 2

    Connect MongoDB on Fivetran’s page

Fivetran’s page asks for your cluster’s address and a login that can read your data, and shows the IP addresses to allow first.

  3. 3

    Choose what to sync

Back in Orcabase, tick the data you want. Only what you pick is synced, and only it counts toward your allowance.

  4. 4

    Ask away

The first sync starts straight away. When it’s done, ask the agent about your MongoDB data.

What you’ll need

  • A MongoDB replica set or an Atlas cluster, reachable over TLS.
  • Someone who can add a database login and change network access, like an Atlas Project Owner.
  • Room on your allowlist for Fivetran’s IP addresses, for your cluster’s region.
  • The Admin role in Orcabase, and data hosting: Fivetran writes into a database Orcabase hosts for you.

Questions

About MongoDB and Orcabase

More in the docs: Sync apps with Fivetran

Why isn’t MongoDB read live, like Postgres?
Answers need rows and columns, and MongoDB keeps documents. The copy Fivetran makes is already laid out for questions, and it can sit next to your other data.
Do I need to open my database to the internet?
Fivetran needs to reach it. The usual way is to allow Fivetran’s IP addresses for your region; Fivetran also supports an SSH tunnel for databases in private networks.
Do I need a Fivetran account?
No. Orcabase uses its own. You sign in to MongoDB on Fivetran’s page, and the data lands in a database Orcabase hosts for you, so there’s nothing else to set up or pay Fivetran for.
How fresh is my MongoDB data in Orcabase?
Fivetran syncs it every 6 hours as standard, and an admin can run a sync by hand at any time. The page for each source shows when it last synced and when it syncs next.
What does syncing cost?
Counts toward your monthly sync allowance: 500,000 changed rows a month, as standard. Each distinct row that’s added or changed in a month counts once, however often it changes, and the first full copy is free. You choose which tables sync, so you only spend the allowance on what you need.
